Our History

History_001The Perrysburg Township site of Belmont Country Club originally began as "Belmont Farm", owned by William Windus Knight, Sr. He chose the name in honor of his parents' birthplace, Belmont, NY. Before becoming a country club, the Belmont land was known for its agricultural heritage. it operated as a busy farm producing grains and pigs, as a dairy farm, and was once renowned as The Belmont Hunt Club.

Edward Knight, an executive with the Nicholas Corporation, which held the title to the land, led the development of the site into a golf course and a residential area with one-acre homesites. In 1966, the Wadsworth Company was contracted to construct the course, located in the area bounded by Bates and Mandell Roads, the Ohio Turnpike, and the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad. Chicago landscape architect Robert Bruce Harris was commissioned to design the course. Belmont Country Club was officially incorporated on July 9, 1967, and construction of the course began shortly thereafter, with its completion targeted for spring 1968.

Mr. Harris undertook the daunting task of turning flat terrain into a 7,085-yard course, which involved bulldozing more than half a million cubic yards of dirt into rolling fairways graced by five lakes.

Construction of the course faced a series of persistent challenges. Issues with wells, the sewer system, and drainage proved to be significant obstacles. The weather was also uncooperative, with an exceptionally wet fall in 1967 followed by a harsh, bitterly cold winter. Dikes leaked and eroded, further complicating the work. Additionally, a 12-week strike by local building tradesmen halted progress in the spring. Despite these setbacks, Belmont Country Club officially opened for play on June 8, 1968.

The Harris-designed par-72 course was crafted to offer both a challenging and scenic experience, featuring large, undulating greens, fairways lined with mature trees and shrubs, and six holes bordered by picturesque water hazards. Later, world-renowned Toledo-area golf course architect Arthur Hills made additional modifications to further enhance the course's design.

On December 23, 1980, a devastating $2.3 million fire destroyed the clubhouse. In response, club members and employees came together to rebuild and move forward. While the club has faced other challenges over the years, it has always persevered and thrived, thanks to the dedication of its members and staff. Today, Belmont Country Club remains true to its roots as one of the Toledo area's premier country clubs.
